Chief of Police
The Town of Sparta currently is seeking qualified applicants for the position of chief of police. Sparta is a progressive community with a population of approximately 2000 residents. The Town of Sparta has a council-manager form of government, with a mayor & 5 council members. The police department provides service 24 hrs./day, 7 days/wk. w/6 FT officers, including the chief. The chief is a “working chief”, and regularly works a patrol shift. The chief is appointed by and reports directly to the town manager. Candidates for the position must be a N.C. certified law enforcement officer with at least 5 yrs. of strong technical & supervisory level experience in a law enforcement agency. The chief will be expected to plan, organize, direct and evaluate all operations of the police department. Other requirements include: a strong commitment to community-oriented policing; strong interpersonal, written & verbal communications skills, computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office; the ability to relate to elected officials, town staff, citizens and other law enforcement officials; and knowledge of federal, state & municipal ordinances related to law enforcement. The position has administrative duties that require approval of payroll records, scheduling of shift work, and department budget responsibility, to include approval of departmental expenses.
